However, the Koi Nation is working hard to bring a casino to tribal lands in Sonoma Valley. What kinds of games can you play at Southern California casinos?

In 2000, CA voters approved Proposition 1A, expanding the types of games that could be offered at the state’s casinos to include Class III operations. This means you’ll find many of the iconic games from casino-themed movies and TV shows at your disposal when you’re ready to play. Here are some of the most popular kinds of games you can play at Southern California casinos.

  • Slot machines: Slot machines are often the biggest draw at Southern California casinos; in fact, the first machines were invented in San Francisco in 1895. Slots require players to stop a set of spinning reels in a way that aligns a series of symbols/icons to match up a winning combination. Games can also include a progressive jackpot that can reach into the thousands, if not millions, of dollars for a lucky winner.
  • Poker: Even at a time when casino gaming was prohibited in California, poker rooms were still permitted to operate. Casino poker is fully legal now, with many facilities offering Texas Hold’em, Omaha, stud poker, draw poker, video poker, and more.
  • California Roulette: Traditional roulette is prohibited in California, but there is a slightly different way to play that is permitted at the state’s tribal casinos. California roulette instead features a deck of cards rather than the standard spinning wheel. Players still make their bets in the same way they would before, but instead, a card is ejected from a shuffler to determine the outcome.
